I have read a few goths by Daoma Winston, and this book is pretty typical of her output- which is to say schlocky in the extreme, but highly readable. This plot is pretty wacky, and brace yourself- it involves – are you ready-HYPNOTIZING !! Despite the suicides, straight jackets, and constant screaming of, “It’s the group mind, it’s coming for me now!!”, and such, Seminar in Evil made me nostalgic for my bucolic university days, and sad that I missed out on being horribly manipulated by a crazed psychologist in a questionable class and living arrangement like this tale’s protagonist, Jennifer, while her parents were simply glad that she opted to stay on campus during Thanksgiving and most of Christmas so they could free up their time for bridge parties with their middle aged pals.

What ensues next involves lots of bell bottom wearin’, groovy guitar pluckin’ and folk singin’, and hip young students slowly going bonkers. Paulen’s psychology class on evoking the “group mind”. Eight college students sign up to participate in the afore described Dr. I am sure we all remember our college days, and how our dark and vaguely sinister, strangely attractive yet at the same time repellent professor asked us to participate in a small group “seminar”, and then said to the small group, “Hey, since I live alone in a huge, spooky manse, why don’t you kids just come and live at my place…rent free, of course!” Yeah, I don’t remember this either, but that is the set up for Daoma Winston’s (her real name, by the way) 1972 novel Seminar in Evil.
